Specific Gravity
Specific GravityIs the measurement of the weight of a certain volume of a substance, compared to the weight of the same volume of pure water, when measured at the same temperature and pressure..
|
SG = Mass of given volume of a substance/Mass of an equal volume of pure water
|
The specific gravity of water is quoted as 1.00, and is normally measured at 20° C at a pressure equal to sea level (1 atmosphere). Therefore 1kg of pure water is 1L.
As with optical rotation, the specific gravity of an essential oil is quoted within a range, and any deviation from that range could indicate impurity. |
