Essential Oil Terminology
The composition of essential oils used for therapeutic purposes is of critical importance. It is clear that two oils of differing chemical compositions will have markedly different pharmacological and healing effects. This simple fact has been long ignored by medical science. Examination of published studies on the therapeutic effects of essential oils reveals that these studies have not paid much attention to the significance of the chemical makeup of these essential oils.
It is a mystery why modern research, which normally scrutinizes even the smallest details, has studied essential oils without giving due attention to their chemical compositions. No wonder various studies of the same oil often would have contradictory results. Such studies would frequently report on oils of the same name but different chemical makeups. Defining and describing oils precisely is crucial, and a trend in this direction began in the late 1970's. In order to accurately analyse the chemical composition of an essential oil, it is necessary to distill it from only one plant variety, even though the ratios of individual components may vary due to climatic influences, growing region, and time of harvest. |
