Manuka Essential Oil
Manuka Essential Oil. Manuka is a small tree with red wood, dark green pointed sickle shaped leaves, characteristic of the myrtaceae, and small red flowers in clusters.
In traditional Maori society, all knowledge of medicinal plants was held by the medicinal herbalist, known as 'tonunga' and gradually this knowledge became known to the rest of the people. The older women of the tribe kept the knowledge alive and ensured that it was handed down from generation to generation.
The accounts of early European settlers describe treatments of conditions such as skin infections, external wounds, burns and sores with Manuka. Internally an infusion of the inner bark was used as a sedative for an excited person or someone in pain. As a digestive tonic for the treatment of constipation, dysentry and diarrhea, pieces of the bark were boiled until the water darkened in colour, then the liquid was drunk.
