Adulteration
Origanum and various Spanish essential oils are used instead of true thyme oil or as diluents. White thyme is often a compounded oil containiing pine oil fractions, terpineol, rosemary, eucalyptus and red thyme fractions, and/or p-cymene, pinene, limonene, caryophellene and origanum.
GRAS
Red Thyme oil has GRAS status.
Uses
Thyme oil has been used in mouth washes, gargles. cough linctuses and a special Thyme Elixer for treating whooping cough and bronchitis (0.05 - 0.3ml of thyme oil BPC). External applications as a rubificient and counter irritant include dilution with olive or other oils (37).
