Angostura Bark Essential Oil
Angostura Bark is obtained from a wild growing tree, Galipea cusparia, in the mountains along the Orinoco river in Venezuala. The baark is used locally as a febrifuge, and some therapeutic effect is attributed to glycosides in the bark. The essential oil is produced by steam distillation of the bark. More common thatn the essential oil is a tincture extracted using alcohol from the bark. Angostura tinctures are used in the flavouring of alcoholic beverages where a bitter or astringent effect is called for. The popular bitter known as 'Angostura bitters" is not made from angostura bark at all, but from gentian, bitter orange, cinnamon bark, and other herbs.
